The two principal reception rooms are dual aspect and offer wonderful views of the garden and charming inglenook fireplaces. The kitchen has been sympathetically extended with a breakfast room, flooding the space with natural light and connecting the indoors and outdoors.
Two staircases provide access to the first floor and study space. Upstairs, the four double bedrooms are all dual aspect, with most overlooking the garden and/or the river and church. A substantial wooden pergola draped in fragrant climbers is a wonderful spot for entertaining and relaxing. The large garage with an integral door provides parking and utility space.
Seller Insight
”Built in the mid-1500s, The Old Cottage and surrounding land was once owned by renowned artist, Walter Dendy Sadler, and has featured in some of his paintings. He designed the gardens himself which, to this day, retain the same infrastructure in the flowerbeds and trees. We stood in the garden and were struck by the beauty, and it was this, along with the characterful, large rooms and sense of history that all came together and simply blew us away,” recall the owners.
”The location was also very appealing as transport links are excellent. The setting is truly idyllic with unsurpassed views of the river, meadows, garden, churchyard, and church tower. Lake Ashmore, in the village, is perfect for open swimming. The village has lots going on and it’s a great place for people of all ages to enjoy everything it has to offer, including the annual regatta where our sons earned their rowing skills and a love of the water for which we will be forever grateful.”
”Just take a step out of the front door or through the garden gate and you will find yourself immersed in nature. From our garden gate we can access the river to drop ourselves in for a quick dip or canoe. The garden is secluded and not overlooked, so it lends itself to entertaining and we have naturally become the ’go to’ place for work parties and gatherings with family and friends. The jasmine-covered pergola is a wonderful feature and we’re surrounded by the divine scent whilst dining or relaxing in the swing chair.”
”The addition of the breakfast room has been quite transformative in how we have lived in the house and it has been much loved by all. Panoramic views of the garden, trees, and length of the beautiful old part of the property provide a scenic backdrop for a room where we can sit and be at one with the scenery. We tend to gravitate towards the older part of the house as it has a very special ambience and characterful features, such as the double-sided inglenook. We’ve celebrated christenings and birthdays here, as well as our annual Christmas party when the dining room setting comes into its own. There are many serene spots in the house where we sit and lose ourselves in the peace and views of nature which are interrupted only by the occasional barge passing quietly by.”
